Cuban Support Rallies Around Raúl Castro Amid Indictment

The Cuban government and its state-run media have unified in support of Raúl Castro, the country’s former president and a revolutionary figure, following his indictment in the U.S. for murder charges. This indictment is related to the 1996 shooting down of two civilian planes in international airspace.

Social media platforms were flooded with posts displaying images of Mr. Castro during his time as a young soldier, scenes depicting him meeting children, sharing moments with his brother Fidel, waving the Cuban flag, and engaging with teenagers. These images were accompanied by messages extolling his honor.

“He’s like a father to me,” said current Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel in a video statement.

Despite Mr. Castro retiring from official roles, his influence remains significant in Cuba. The indictment arrives as a serious challenge for him in his later years.

The charges from the United States appear aimed at pressuring Cuba under the Trump administration. Yet, experts suggest these charges may instead strengthen the resolve of Cuban officials by uniting them against U.S. pressure.

Photos from Havana show Cubans attentively watching news reports of the U.S. legal actions against Mr. Castro, revealing a nation closely following developments.

The situation represents a complex chapter in U.S.-Cuba relations, with Raúl Castro remaining at the center of attention both domestically and internationally.
