Crisis in Paris Schools Over Child Abuse Allegations

A 36-year-old former school employee, identified in the French media only as David G., faced trial in Paris on Tuesday. He is accused of sexually assaulting eight children. This case reveals a yearlong crisis concerning child abuse allegations in approximately 130 educational institutions, including schools, kindergartens, and nurseries in Paris.

David G., previously a member of the nonteaching staff at the Alphonse Baudin school—a kindergarten located in central Paris—was suspended last April and subsequently arrested in June. Paris prosecutors stated that several parents raised concerns about behavioral changes in their children, prompting the school’s director to alert authorities. In court, David G. denied all charges, stating, “Looking back now, I realize I should have been more careful around children, kept my distance, played with them less, and held them on my lap less often.”

In addition to the accusations involving children, David G. is also charged with sexually assaulting or harassing two adult colleagues. The school administration has not publicly commented on the ongoing case, and the education ministry has refrained from making any remarks.

The crisis within the Parisian school system relates to the investigation of dozens of nonteaching staff regarding similar allegations of child abuse during recess or after-school activities. The scandal has undermined confidence in the school system, introducing early challenges for the new mayor, Emmanuel Grégoire.

“We hope this case will be a turning point in child protection,”

said Rebecca Royer, a lawyer representing six of the victims’ families, alongside Hannah Kopp. Their clients chose to open the trial to the public to demonstrate that such cases are not isolated incidents.

In France, teachers, recruited by the national Education Ministry, manage academic instruction, while city authorities hire other staff members for overseeing recess, lunch, and extracurricular activities.
