A New Approach for Democrats on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Chris Van Hollen, the senior senator from Maryland, urges Democrats to reassess their stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He acknowledges that both Republican and Democratic approaches have not succeeded.

Historically, Democrats have offered unwavering support to Israeli governments, ignoring actions contrary to American interests and values. Despite advocating for a two-state solution, they haven’t used their influence effectively. Van Hollen suggests it’s time to apply pressure to end the occupation and facilitate two states with equal political and legal rights.

Forty Democrats have recently voted against transferring specific military equipment to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. This shows increasing recognition that the status quo is unacceptable. The senior senator supports Israel’s security needs but criticizes the unchecked acceptance of their defense arguments.

“Israel has used its strength not only as a shield, but also as a sword to bury the two-state solution.”

Evidence highlights that violent settlers in the West Bank attack Palestinians, often without repercussions, with Israeli security forces complicit at times. Israel’s actions have amounted to de facto annexation, limiting Palestinian territories.

Van Hollen’s personal visits to Israel and the West Bank have provided firsthand insight into the situation. He has witnessed illegal settlements, interacted with displaced Palestinian families, and spoken with bereaved families on both sides.

In Ramallah, he met with Palestinian American parents seeking justice for children killed. In Gaza, he observed aid trucks halted at checkpoints while children suffered, and saw Rafah devastated by military actions.
