Fernando Mendoza, a rookie quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, is committed to his team’s training. Recently, he declined an opportunity to visit the White House with his Indiana teammates. The visit was to celebrate their national championship win with President Donald Trump. Mendoza chose to focus on the Raiders practice sessions instead.
Attending the NFLPA Rookie Premier
The league required Mendoza to attend the NFL Players Association Rookie Premier event. Despite his dedication to practice, he was not pleased with this obligation. “I’d rather be practicing,” Mendoza expressed to Gilbert Manzano of SI.com, citing his frustration over missing training.
Yet, Mendoza acknowledged the value of the event. “It’s mandatory that I be here, but I won’t feel upset about it,” he shared. Mendoza recognized the opportunity to learn and make connections.
Gaining Insight and Opportunities
Mendoza admitted he gained insights during the event. “I’ll make the most of this moment, learn all [NFLPA] benefits, and connect with mentors,” he noted. Mendoza aims to maximize his opportunities, understanding that such experiences are beneficial.
Expectations for Mendoza’s Role with the Raiders
Mendoza, the top pick in the 2026 draft, faces a competitive situation. Initially, he is expected to start as a backup to Kirk Cousins. However, should the Raiders struggle or need a strategic shift, Mendoza might see significant playing time as a rookie.
Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has high expectations for Mendoza’s progression. “I think he’ll be starting by the season’s halfway point,” Moon predicted. He believes Mendoza will benefit from learning under Cousins before stepping onto the field.
