The Park Slope Food Co-op, a grocery store known for its socially conscious values, is facing internal conflict. A vote will be held on Tuesday regarding a proposed boycott of Israeli products.
Members of this Brooklyn-based co-op, which often reflects the views and purchasing habits of local liberals, are deeply divided on the issue. They have engaged in lively debates during recent meetings. The scheduled vote has prompted the co-op to inform members via email that additional security measures will be in place. This decision came after the co-op received threats and suspicious mails, as well as aggressive phone calls and hostile social media activity.
The co-op emphasized that while most members act respectfully, certain discussions have escalated. Some meetings have resulted in verbal confrontations and, occasionally, physical altercations among members. An email from the co-op mentioned incidents where laughter followed mentions of antisemitism or veiled references to Jewish control in the United States. This has caused concern among Jewish leaders and some of the co-op’s 17,000 members.
The co-op, being one of the oldest and largest in the country, has seen varied opinions among its members during this tense period. The outcome of the vote is awaited with anticipation as it may shape the future policies of the store.
