A recent shooting near the White House has brought security concerns to the forefront. Madeleine Rivera provided a live report from Washington, D.C., on an incident where a gunman was shot by Secret Service agents. The incident, which brings attention to ongoing threats involving President Donald Trump and his administration, highlights potential political violence.
Authorities identified the suspect as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old from Maryland. Best reportedly approached a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. At around 6 p.m. local time, he took a weapon from his bag and began shooting at officers. The Secret Service responded by returning fire, ultimately killing the gunman.
A senior administration official provided insights into Best’s history. Best had encounters with the Secret Service and a background of mental health issues. During the incident, he fired three shots toward the executive mansion.
This shooting incident came on the heels of another near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel. Cole Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, was identified as the suspect in that occurrence. He traveled to Washington armed and had a manifesto expressing his intentions. Online posts by Allen showed anti-Trump sentiments and hostility toward Christians.
Authorities stated Allen planned to target senior Trump administration officials at the dinner. His plot was thwarted by law enforcement before he could act.
The sequence of events reflects security challenges faced in recent years. In 2024, an attempt on Trump’s life occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. During the attack, Trump sustained a minor injury, and one rally attendee died. Months later, another suspect was found near the Trump International Golf Club in Florida with a rifle.
Earlier this year, in February, Secret Service agents responded to another threat at Mar-a-Lago while Trump was in Washington. A man carrying a shotgun and gas canister attempted unauthorized entry through the resort’s north gate.
Federal officials have expressed concern over growing threats against Trump and former administration officials. These concerns include risks tied to extremist rhetoric, online radicalization, and influence from foreign adversaries.
Officials continue to address the complex landscape of escalating threats and security measures. As the political climate intensifies, ensuring the safety of public figures remains a top priority.
