Lisa Hartman Black and Clint Black have maintained a marriage built on strong communication for nearly 35 years. When they said I do, their promise was genuine. Now, the couple joins forces in a new Lifetime movie, When I Said I Do. It’s based on the song they recorded together in 1999. The film follows the journey of Ali Corley, played by Sarah Drew, a K-9 handler who overcomes personal tragedy and finds love again. As executive producers, Lisa and Clint also appear in the movie as podcast hosts.
The movie will premiere on Lifetime on May 23 at 8 p.m., with streaming available the next day. Lisa Hartman Black shared with Fox News Digital the origins of the song, saying Clint initially asked her to sing with him, and though hesitant, she eventually agreed. The duet found success in charts, awards, and even became a favorite at weddings and vow renewals.
Lisa met Clint after his New Year’s Eve concert in 1990. They married in October 1991 and welcomed daughter Lily Pearl Black in 2001. Their bond includes meaningful communication, highlighted by Clint’s experience of advice from Roy Rogers on never going to bed angry. Misinterpretations can occur, but Hartman Black stresses that clearing the air makes a difference.
Communication and friendship form the foundation of their relationship. Lisa sees Clint as her best friend, always honoring and respecting that. They’ve navigated life’s challenges together, including personal heartbreaks, such as pregnancy losses before their daughter’s birth.
Their early years included the decision to prioritize family over careers, particularly in Lily’s early years when Clint took time off to focus on parenting. Lisa appreciates the capacity to continually fall in love with Clint due to his solid character and shared laughter.
The couple views their daughter as a talented young adult, inheriting creative skills from her father and a vocal gift. Their family life thrives in simplicity, from dinners to shopping trips, where they feel fortunate to be best friends.
Reflecting on her relationship with Clint, Lisa describes meeting him later in life, which benefited their maturity and shared values. This alignment accelerated their commitment, leading to a lasting connection characterized by humor and meaningful conversation.
Their dedication to listening and respecting each other has sustained their relationship. They allow space for each partner to express themselves, maintaining in-depth understanding and respect.
