The dramatic conclusion to the City Series unfolded on Sunday afternoon at Rate Field. The White Sox claimed victory in a thrilling back-and-forth match against the Cubs. Tristan Peters momentarily put the White Sox ahead in the eighth inning with a three-run homer, marking the first of his career. But the Cubs soon responded in the ninth with Michael Conforto’s game-tying three-run home run.
In the 10th inning, catcher Edgar Quero delivered a memorable moment. He emerged from a slump to hit a walk-off, two-run homer against Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison. This lifted the Sox to a 9-8 win in front of 38,608 cheering fans. Speaking of the win, Quero said, “It feels amazing. When I hit the ball, I knew it was going deep.”
Quero, who entered the game with a .151 batting average and one extra-base hit for the season, shined with a three-hit performance. “I was happy for me, for the team, for everybody. Last night I was thinking about it. I knew it was going to be a good game for me because I visualized it,” he said.
The Sox’s triumph marked their first series win against the Cubs since 2022. Sox manager Will Venable expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, saying, “You understand the significance of the series and you want to perform well, obviously for our fans as well.” The Sox have now won three consecutive series.
The Cubs, now struggling after losing three series in a row, reflected on the day’s intense play. “When you give up nine runs, that’s too many,” noted Cubs manager Craig Counsell, acknowledging the quality of the contest despite their loss.
The game started strongly for the Cubs as Michael Busch’s home run and Alex Bregman’s efforts quickly put them in a 3-0 lead. However, the White Sox fought back. They narrowed the gap with Quero’s RBI single in the second inning and evened the score with a two-run double by Miguel Vargas in the fifth.
By the eighth inning, the Sox took the lead. Peters’ three-run homer, hit off a 1-0 sweeper from Phil Maton, brought the Sox a 7-4 advantage. Peters, known for his strong center-field defense and small-ball strategy, remarked, “It was incredible, probably the most emotion I’ve ever showed on a field.”
Yet, the Cubs countered. Conforto’s three-run home run in the ninth inning tied the game once more. “I want to make sure I swing at strikes,” Conforto said, explaining his approach to facing Sox closer Seranthony Domínguez.
The tension continued into the 10th inning. The Cubs briefly led 8-7 after Dansby Swanson scored. However, a first-pitch fastball met with Quero’s bat sent the decisive home run over left-center field, sealing the game and series for the White Sox.
Quero appreciated the victory’s significance, stating, “It means a lot for everybody in the clubhouse. I’m happy for this team.” He ranked the home run alongside his major-league debut in personal significance, adding to a notable day for both him and the team.
