Austin Police Capture Suspects Connected to Shooting Spree

Authorities in south Austin, Texas, have lifted a shelter-in-place order after arresting two suspects tied to a series of random shootings between late Saturday and Sunday. The Austin Police Department made this announcement via a post on X. ‘The shelter in place for the south Austin area has been lifted, and two suspects are in custody,’ it stated. However, one suspect remains at large in the Manor area, with further updates to follow.

At a press briefing earlier, Mayor Kirk Watson confirmed multiple shooting incidents across the area, including at least two fire stations. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis described the shootings as ‘random’ and mentioned that investigators have not yet determined a clear motive.

A final update from Austin PD at around 7 p.m. local time featured Watson’s gratitude towards all involved in the investigation. Chief Davis added that both suspects are now in custody. One suspect already had an outstanding warrant for the theft of a firearm from the same store where his accomplice had previously stolen a gun. The pair stole four vehicles during their spree, which included firing at apartment buildings and fire stations, even damaging a fire truck.

The department received 20 calls for service related to these suspects. Both Mayor Watson and Chief Davis praised the public’s cooperation with alert notices and requested any additional information regarding Sunday’s events.

Identity of the Suspects

The identities of the apprehended suspects have not been disclosed. However, Davis mentioned the pursuit of a third suspect. Initially, the police described the suspects as two Hispanic males in their late teens, one with medium wavy hair and another with longer hair. It remains unknown which individuals have been detained.

Authorities released details on three vehicles linked to the shootings: a black Honda Accord, a gold Honda, and a white Nissan Altima. Mayor Watson noted that the suspects appeared to switch vehicles during the incidents.

The Victims

Four individuals have been shot in the spree. One victim sustained life-threatening injuries, while the remaining three escaped with less severe wounds. There is no further information on the victims, and it remains unclear if any were fire station personnel.

Affected Neighborhoods

The initial shelter-in-place order impacted a vast area of south Austin, extending from Skyline Park to Dick Nicholas District Park. Although the order for south Austin is now lifted, residents in Manor should remain alert as the police search for the last suspect.

Guidance for Residents

Chief Davis urged residents to contact 911 if they notice anything suspicious and advised against approaching any of the suspected vehicles. Residents should take precautions with their vehicles by not leaving keys or key fobs inside, as numerous vehicles have been stolen during this crime spree.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Expect additional updates soon.

This is a developing story; more information will be provided as it becomes available.
