Attack Allegedly Inspired by Brenton Tarrant
Two teenagers, Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, have attacked the Islamic Center of San Diego. They reportedly identified as “Sons of Tarrant,” named after Brenton Tarrant, a white supremacist who carried out deadly mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019.
The attackers killed themselves after opening fire, resulting in the deaths of three victims. Investigations reveal they met online, where they became radicalized, sharing extremist beliefs.
Mark Remily, the FBI agent leading the investigation, stated the shooters did not discriminate in their hatred.
Manifesto and Ideology
A 75-page document titled “The New Crusade: Sons of Tarrant” is under investigation for its potential link to these suspects. The document echoes hateful sentiments towards several groups, including Muslims, Jews, and LGBTQ+ communities, and glorifies white supremacy and Adolf Hitler.
The manifesto describes Tarrant, responsible for killing 51 people in Christchurch, as a blueprint for similar attacks. Monday’s shooting was also livestreamed, echoing Tarrant’s actions.
Brenton Tarrant’s Influence
Brenton Tarrant attacked two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, 2019, killing 51 and injuring numerous others. He livestreamed the first attack. Tarrant later admitted to the charges and received a life sentence without parole.
His actions have inspired similar attacks globally.
Details of the Attack and Victims
The victims of Monday’s attack, Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad, are recognized for their bravery. They slowed the attackers’ progress, protecting the 140 schoolchildren present at the mosque.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl highlighted Abdullah’s brave engagement in a gun battle, which delayed the shooters. Despite being shot, Abdullah forced the attackers back, but succumbed to injuries outside.
Kaziha and Awad diverted the attackers away as they returned inside, ultimately saving lives as they too were fatally shot in the parking lot.
Imam Taha Hassane described the victims as valued community members. He noted Abdullah’s sacrifice prevented further tragedy. Kaziha, known for his dedication to the mosque, and Awad worked together to confront the threat.
All three victims are remembered for their heroism and selfless actions.
