A woman allegedly connected to Minnesota’s substantial “Feeding Our Future” scandal faces new charges in a daycare fraud scheme. Fahima Egeh Mahamud is accused of misappropriating millions earmarked for children’s meals. Authorities charged her with wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the U.S., according to court documents.
Mahamud became the focus of attention this year when indicted for her role in the $250 million “Feeding Our Future” scheme. She is accused of enrolling Future Leaders Early Learning, her Minneapolis daycare, in a federal child nutrition program under false pretenses, claiming to serve thousands of nonexistent meals.
Further charges on Wednesday accused her of defrauding the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). This program provides daycare support to low-income families. Mahamud allegedly submitted over 13,000 false claims to CCAP between October 2022 and December 2025, totaling approximately $4.6 million. Prosecutors noted these claims were fraudulent because she falsely stated she collected mandatory co-payments from families, a requirement for federal reimbursement.
The alleged fraud was brought to light in a viral video by influencer Nick Shirley. His video, featuring the Future Leaders Early Learning center, exposed empty, Somali-operated childcare centers around Minneapolis and alleged large-scale fraud.
The video led to immediate action by the Trump administration, resulting in a crackdown involving multiple agencies. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) subsequently froze around $185 million in federal childcare funding to Minnesota. Additionally, over 2,000 agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were deployed to investigate further.
