Filming in the rugged landscapes of Texas presents unique challenges, as revealed by ‘Dutton Ranch’ star Cole Hauser. In an appearance on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show,’ Hauser, alongside co-star Kelly Reilly, discussed a significant safety issue encountered during production.
Hauser recounted the presence of 3,400 rattlesnakes over an eight-month filming period in Fort Worth, Texas. This startling number of snakes once caused an early shutdown of production. Reilly, who portrays Beth Dutton, inquired about filming near a rattlesnake den, prompting Hauser to explain that they had to reconsider a nighttime shoot when the director discovered 40 to 50 rattlesnakes at the location.
“That particular location was meant for a night shoot. After finding those snakes, plans changed,” Hauser noted.
Harsh filming conditions are not unusual for productions associated with Taylor Sheridan. Michelle Pfeiffer, involved in Sheridan’s latest show ‘The Madison’ on Paramount+, shared insights on the tough environment faced in Montana and Texas. Pfeiffer, playing Stacy Clyburn, described working without the usual filming accommodations.
The lack of basic facilities was notable. “You might as well be in a tent,” Pfeiffer remarked, highlighting the absence of bathrooms, air conditioning, and plumbing. She explained that the setup was rushed, with scenes shot in open terrain offering little shelter or comfort.
“There was nowhere for us to sit, no nearby restroom, and no food,” Pfeiffer added. Filming through varied seasons brought further challenges, with no heating in winter and no shade in summer. Adjustments took time as the team adapted to the demanding conditions.
