Cuba is prepared to make adjustments to its economy and government, showing eagerness for continued negotiations with the United States. However, it questions the sincerity of Washington’s participation in these talks, according to Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations.
“Cuba is willing to talk about everything with the United States. There is no taboo subject in our conversations — on the basis of reciprocity and equality,” stated Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, the Cuban ambassador, in an interview.
The ambassador expressed concern over recent statements by President Trump that suggested a readiness to take control of Cuba. Soberón Guzmán noted, “Warmongering rhetoric does not help.” He criticized the creation of pretexts for military aggression against Cuba, viewing them as detrimental to productive dialogue and trust.
The interview marked a rare occasion where a Cuban government official spoke on record with The New York Times in years. Soberón Guzmán emphasized Cuba’s desire for peace and cooperation with the U.S., despite the ongoing pressure from the Trump administration.
