Thailand Imposes New Visa Restrictions on Tourists

Thailand plans to reduce the allowable duration of visa-free stays for tourists from numerous countries, including the United States. This decision, announced by the government on Tuesday, affects citizens from 54 nations.

Formerly, tourists from these countries could stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without needing a visa. Now, this period will be limited to 30 days, as confirmed by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Previously, Thailand had eased entry requirements in 2024 to boost tourism after the pandemic. This led to approximately 33 million foreign tourists visiting Thailand in 2025, down from nearly 40 million in 2019.

The updated visa policy impacts travelers from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and other countries. The Thai Embassy in Washington confirmed the plan but did not provide specific reasons for the change. However, reports suggest concerns about tourists engaging in unauthorized businesses and committing crimes.

The policy will be enacted 15 days after being published in The Royal Gazette, the official Thai government publication. The exact date of publication is unknown.

Travelers already in Thailand under existing visa rules can stay until their current period of stay expires.

Countries not covered under this new 30-day rule will encounter varying requirements, such as a 15-day visa exemption for certain Indian Ocean island nations and visas on arrival for citizens from a few countries, including India.

Visitors needing a visa can apply through Thailand’s online visa portal.
