GOP Faces Risk of Losing Key Voter Demographic

A leading Senate Republican has expressed concern over a potential shift in the voting bloc that has supported the GOP in recent elections. Historically, White, working-class voters aligned with the Democratic Party, maintaining Democratic control in Congress until the 1990s and favoring Democrats in presidential elections.

The political landscape changed with Donald Trump’s 2016 victory, establishing a robust Republican base among working-class voters. Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio, a prominent Trump supporter, has issued a warning about the GOP’s stability due to economic challenges. He emphasized the significance of retaining these voters for the Republican Party’s survival.

“If we don’t hang on to those working-class voters, we’re dead as a party,” Moreno stated.

Trump achieved significant support from White, working-class voters in his presidential runs, receiving between 66% and 67% of their votes from 2016 to 2024, according to exit polls.

Recently, some Democrats admitted challenges in engaging the working class. Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut suggested that the Democratic Party should adopt economic populism following notable election losses. He urged Democrats to reconnect with the working-class identity.

As midterm elections approach, Republicans face economic pressures that concern voters. Affordability remains a priority issue, as highlighted by a Fox News poll where nearly 60% of voters cited the economy as their primary concern. Another poll indicated a 67% disapproval rating among White voters without a college degree regarding Trump’s economic management.

Despite economic strategies and legislative successes, such as a “big, beautiful bill,” Republicans aim to persuade voters of gasoline costs’ temporary nature amid ongoing conflicts.

Moreno addressed working-class frustrations over high gas prices, linking discontent to the extended conflict with Iran. He noted Americans’ struggles, stating, “They’re an engine failure in their vehicle away from bankruptcy.” Moreno defended the need for current actions, citing longstanding hostilities from Iran.
