San Francisco 49ers’ Star Receiver Faces Achilles Issue

The San Francisco 49ers maintain their unbeaten streak, but not without a cost. Star receiver Mike Evans continues to struggle with an Achilles problem.

During a 23-17 victory against the Washington Commanders, Evans left the game late in the first half. Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed post-game that Evans is suffering from Achilles tendinitis. This condition also kept him out of practice leading up to the Week 6 matchup.

Shanahan addressed the level of concern regarding Evans’ condition, linking it to a recurring issue for the receiver. “It’s something that’s bothered him before and throughout the week,” Shanahan explained. “When dealing with Achilles tendinitis, it often flares up. I hope he recovers during the week.” The team does not view it as a severe, long-term problem, and further scans are not expected.

Evans missed practice all week, leading to a game-time decision that Shanahan described as “a pretty close call.” Evans had assured Shanahan of handling the issue in the past during his NFL career. “He gave me that confidence, but there was awareness he might not last,” said Shanahan.

Evans, who accumulated 94 yards over three catches, left the game after a 16-yard catch shortly before halftime and did not return. His absence was felt; the team managed only 72 yards and three points in the second half, going three-and-out on three consecutive fourth-quarter drives.

Remaining healthy wide receivers, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, and Malik Turner, could only produce two receptions for 35 yards collectively.

Injuries also plagued linebacker Luke Gifford and cornerback Upton Stout, who sustained groin and shoulder injuries, respectively.

Shanahan holds hope that Evans can play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7, but acknowledges that “we’ll have to have the rest of the group step up” if he cannot. Receiver Christian Kirk, after participating in two practices, is “a possibility” for the game. However, fellow receivers Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel Sr. are not expected back before the Week 8 break.
