Matt Russo: A Key Player for Naperville Central
Naperville Central’s Matt Russo, the team’s center, plays a crucial yet often uncelebrated role. While Russo might not be in the spotlight, his impact on every play is undeniable. The moment action begins on the field, it all starts with Russo snapping the ball.
“I get to touch the ball every play,” Russo shared. “It’s an important position, and I enjoy doing it for my teammates. I embrace it.” At 5-foot-9 and weighing 235 pounds, Russo is valued by both teammates and coaches alike. Senior quarterback Simon Hayes highlighted Russo’s dedication. “Watching clips before games, Matt’s commitment is evident,” Hayes said. “His willingness to dive for blocks means the world to us.” Both Hayes and Russo began their journey on the freshman B team and now shine in varsity.
Russo’s Journey and Versatility
Starting tackle football in his freshman year, Russo quickly adapted. “My coach recognized I could snap the ball well and placed me at center,” Russo explained. Over time, he shifted roles from a sophomore team center to right tackle last year. This year, he returned to the position he loves most. Coach Mike Ulreich commented on Russo’s adaptability. “Last year, Matt played right tackle for seven games. Despite not fitting the typical mold, he took up the challenge,” Ulreich stated. Russo’s dedication becomes apparent every snap he takes.
The Demands of Playing Center
Being a center involves responsibility and skill. Russo acknowledges the weight of the role. “Presnap is challenging. It’s about ensuring everyone knows their tasks,” Russo noted. He calls out formations, directs blocks, and sets up pass protection. His skills have earned him the trust of coach Ulreich. “Matt makes all the calls for our runs. He’s invaluable,” Ulreich praised.
Beyond Statistics
While few metrics measure an offensive lineman’s success, coaches recognize true talent. “We highlight gritty, selfless plays every Friday, and Russo consistently stands out,” Ulreich remarked. Hayes echoed these sentiments. “With Matt under center, I’m confident in our plays,” Hayes said.
During their recent game against Metea Valley, the Redhawks faced early setbacks with turnovers. Yet, their running offense, greatly supported by the offensive line, led them to rally multiple times. Russo and the O-line made a substantial impact, rushing 35 times for 257 yards, with senior running back Landon Nelson gaining a career-best 219 yards.
Coach Ulreich credited their success to offseason efforts, emphasizing Russo’s role. “Matt embodies our hard work,” he stated. The Redhawks concluded with successful running plays and controlled the game’s final moments effectively.
