Secretary of State Marco Rubio has addressed the precarious situation in Cuba’s government, as well as a recent foiled terror plot near a United Kingdom military base used by the United States. He linked the incident to global threats from adversaries like Iran.
On Fox News’ “Hannity,” Rubio stated, “What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the U.K. over the weekend is a very serious situation. It’s one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” He refrained from providing specific details.
There will be repercussions for threats against U.S. interests.
Rubio emphasized that there are global elements, such as those in Iran, that openly threaten American interests. He assured that any threats or attempts would be taken seriously.
He expressed gratitude to the UK for their collaboration in mitigating the threat, noting, “I want to thank the U.K. for their cooperation and their help on it.” Further information is expected to be revealed soon, but Rubio confirmed it was a serious situation.
Following early Sunday arrests, British police responded to what they termed a major incident at the RAF Fairford base in western England. Although five individuals were released on bail, the investigation continues. Authorities are exploring the possibility of foreign state involvement.
President Donald Trump mentioned a potential connection to Iran, with whom the U.S. has been in conflict since late February. Trump disagreed with the release of the suspects on bail.
A source informed Reuters that the vans associated with the suspects didn’t contain viable explosives. They suggested that the response wasn’t led by intelligence, indicating the five were not under direct surveillance. However, security measures at the base have been heightened, pointing to concerns of it being targeted.
The five suspects, all young British nationals from London, were arrested after a farmer reported three suspicious vans parked near RAF Fairford. Security was noticeably increased at the facility before the arrests. A local farmer reported suspicious activity to the police after noticing the vans and masked individuals.
A large police presence remained around the base with roadblocks in place, though evacuated residents have begun returning to their homes.
The incident underscores warnings from Western governments about threats from hostile actors like Iran and Russia, including potential destabilizing activities or using proxies for plots. Britain’s national terrorism threat level was raised in April amid antisemitic incidents, considering an attack highly likely.
Sanctions have been imposed on individuals and entities linked to Iran for hostile activities, including plotting attacks. Iran has denied involvement in the UK’s recent incidents.
