Police Warn Public After Ole Miss Student Deaths, Kratom Found

Two students from the University of Mississippi have passed away, prompting local law enforcement to issue a warning. Packaged kratom products were discovered during separate probes into their deaths. Although there is no confirmed link between kratom and the fatalities, officials emphasize caution.

As authorities endeavor to uncover the causes behind the deaths, university and state officials are encouraging students to avoid making assumptions. The efforts to prevent overdoses on campus are being intensified.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is conducting two distinct death investigations. At this point, there is no evidence the cases are connected. In both instances, packaged kratom from a retail store was found, yet there is no confirmation that kratom or any other substance played a role in the deaths.

WMC Action 5 News reported that public safety officials responded to Stewart Hall on the University of Mississippi campus after a potential overdose was reported at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday. The person was unresponsive but received CPR. Limited information has been shared about the circumstances surrounding the second student’s death.

“The situation is complex, and we continue to gather information,” said an official involved in the investigations.

Newsweek has reached out to both the Oxford Police Department and the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office for further comments. Updates are expected as the story progresses.
