NFL Fines Cowboys Players for Penalties in Season Opener

The NFL imposed fines on three Dallas Cowboys players following penalties incurred during their season opener loss to the New York Giants. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku, and running back Javonte Williams faced fines amounting to $33,409, based on the NFL’s weekly accountability report.

Overshown received a $9,527 fine for a late hit on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. This incident occurred with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter. The late hit resulted in a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness, aiding the Giants’ touchdown drive.

Ezeiruaku was fined $11,941 for grabbing a Giants player’s facemask late in the fourth quarter. This penalty allowed the Giants to maintain control and ultimately win the game 28-20.

Williams also received an $11,941 fine for taunting Giants safety Tyler Nubin, which occurred after a fourth-quarter touchdown. He held the ball towards Nubin after scoring, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. This was enforced during the extra-point attempt, which Brandon Aubrey missed, leaving Dallas trailing by eight points.

Williams expressed regret, saying, “I don’t know why I did it. It’s just out of character. You don’t got to worry about that no more. The damage is already done. It’s my fault. I’m better than that. I’m a pro,” as reported by NFL Network’s Jane Slater.

Both teams committed numerous penalties, with Dallas concluding the game with nine accepted penalties and the Giants with 11. This clash between NFC East rivals featured a total of 20 penalties.
