A Minnesota pastor, Steve Junker, has died after sustaining a significant spinal cord injury during a cruise in Italy, where he was celebrating his son’s wedding. The incident occurred aboard the Sun Princess on August 16. Junker fell and was later discovered face down, unresponsive in a pool, as detailed on a GoFundMe page created by his family.
Princess Cruises issued a statement to Fox News Digital acknowledging Junker’s death and expressing condolences: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our guest and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this extraordinarily difficult time.”
On the day of the accident, Princess Cruises reported that ship personnel were alerted to Junker’s need for medical assistance. He was attended to by the ship’s medical team and transferred ashore for further care.
“The guest was attended to by the ship’s medical team and subsequently transferred ashore for further care,” the cruise line said.
Junker’s family stated that he sustained a spinal cord injury and nearly drowned during the accident. An Italian Coast Guard boat transported him to a hospital in Naples, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Following emergency spinal surgery the next day, Junker’s family noted the procedure was successful, yet his injury remained severe. They navigated the complexities of arranging medical transport to the United States. Junker was ultimately transported to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 23 for further treatment.
“We are working through the medical, logistical and financial challenges of arranging appropriate medical transport and getting him to a hospital in the United States,” the family wrote before his death.
Sadly, Junker passed away on September 4, surrounded by loved ones. His church, Chippewa Lutheran, paid tribute to his influence and impact: “Pastor Steve was a wonderful person, loved by many, and had a great impact on many people through his faith.”
Steve Junker’s past includes working as a pharmacist before transitioning to ministry. He leaves behind a wife, five children, their spouses, a grandchild, and a host of other family members.
