Mississippi police have apprehended Jarques Ratliff in relation to the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman found hanging from a tree last month. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney confirmed the arrest during a Friday news conference, following the issuance of search and arrest warrants. Ratliff was detained while walking on the street and is charged with murder. Although Ratliff had an ‘association’ with Fortune, specific details remain undisclosed.
The state medical examiner’s office declared Fortune’s death a homicide, enabling the police to execute previously prepared warrants. The investigation remains active, and further arrests might occur. Police have interviewed about 15 individuals, gathered forensic evidence, and pursued leads in the ongoing case. Brackney emphasized the significance of these steps, noting the investigation’s continuation.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, expressed gratitude upon hearing of the arrest. Though she does not know Ratliff, she has been inquiring with Fortune’s friends for any connections. The family is experiencing shock and disbelief as they await more information. Police found Fortune’s body in the backyard of an abandoned Jackson home on August 3.
Fortune’s death occurred shortly after similar cases in Mississippi. Trey Reed, a Black student at Delta State University, died by hanging less than a year ago, deemed a suicide by Cleveland police; no foul play was apparent based on autopsy results and coroner examinations. Reed’s family has requested an independent autopsy and access to security camera footage. Another case involved Cory Zukatis, an unhoused White man, whose death was also ruled as suicide by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner.
The recent developments in Tasia Fortune’s case highlight the complexities surrounding such tragic events, leaving families and communities searching for answers and justice.
