South Park Creators Announce Satirical Rebranding to ‘South America’

The creators of South Park have humorously announced a temporary name change for their series. Rebranded to South America, this move mocks actions by President Donald Trump and tech giants like Apple and Google. This announcement comes ahead of the show’s 29th season premiere.

Satirical Inspiration

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the minds behind the long-standing animated show, attributed this decision to recent trends by major companies influenced by government rebranding efforts. In a statement, they remarked, “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of ‘South Park’ to ‘South America.’” They further expressed gratitude to their parent company, jestingly referring to them as “a Skydance Capitulation.”

We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.

Newsweek reached out to Paramount, Apple, Google, and the White House for responses but has yet to receive any comments.

Significance of the Mock Announcement

South Park has spent nearly three decades carving a niche in political satire. Its recent focus on President Trump has spotlighted the intersection of entertainment and political discourse. This announcement poked fun at not only governmental decisions but also corporations quickly adapting to them. The show’s creators released a tongue-in-cheek statement about renaming the series, which is not genuinely changing its name. The show’s comedic stance continues as a promotional stunt for the upcoming season.

Mockery of Government and Corporate Actions

The satirical rebranding is a parody of the Trump administration’s geographic renaming initiatives, like designating Lake Ontario as Lake America. Such efforts have prompted changes to mapping services from companies like Google and Apple. Trump’s threat to rename New Mexico as “New America,” despite lacking authority, also featured in recent satirical jabs.

In response to recent actions by the administration, Parker and Stone claimed inspiration from the “bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google.” This fictional rebranding aims to remind audiences of the laugh-inducing style of South Park.

Trump’s Recurring Role in the Series

The name-change joke represents a recurring theme concerning Trump in the show. Over recent seasons, South Park repeatedly targets the president, highlighted by portrayals such as a relationship with Satan. These narratives earned the series an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program this year.

On social media, South Park celebrated its Emmy achievement with a humorous jab at Trump, showing a cartoon image of him holding an Emmy. Trump’s longstanding displeasure with the Emmys, stemming from The Apprentice never securing a win despite nominations, is a known sentiment.

Trump’s Renaming Orders

Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario stems from trade disputes with Canada. This renaming followed a prior executive order to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Mapping applications like Google Maps and Apple Maps have updated their interfaces accordingly, while MapQuest resisted such changes, gaining popularity among users.

The Show’s Accolades and Future

With its latest Emmy win, South Park now holds six Emmy awards total. The show’s recent satirical approach, especially targeting political occurrences, has maintained its relevance and popularity.

The 29th season of South Park is set to premiere on September 16 on Comedy Central. New episodes will be available on Paramount+ for viewers in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Based on current promotional activities, the show will continue its satirical examination of Trump and related events.
