Georgia Lawmaker Calls for Probe into H-1B Visa Fraud Allegations

A city in Georgia has come under scrutiny for alleged foreign worker visa fraud. Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., is urging an investigation into suspected abuses of the H-1B visa program within his district. In a letter to the Trump administration, McCormick labeled his district a “suspected hotspot of this fraud.” He also offered his assistance to facilitate cooperation with state agencies and law enforcement.

Georgia’s 7th Congressional District, which McCormick represents, includes part of the Atlanta metro area, such as its northern suburbs. Part of Fulton County, a region under scrutiny lately, falls within this district. The H-1B visa program, established in 1990, aims to help American businesses temporarily hire skilled foreign workers when the domestic labor pool lacks qualified candidates.

“Unfortunately, the H-1B program has become a target for rampant fraud and abuse,” McCormick stated. He highlighted that some people exploit the system to hire labor at below-market wages, taking advantage of workers’ dependence on employment to avoid deportation. The alleged fraud impacts the U.S. labor market, lowering wages and increasing competition for American jobs, especially affecting recent graduates.

McCormick pointed to “stakeholder engagement, reports from constituents, and federal investigations” as sources of his suspicions. Though he didn’t name specific entities, he noted Atlanta’s economic growth and airport presence as factors attracting fraudsters. His comments come in the wake of recent actions by the Trump administration, which began investigating H-1B visa fraud in July.

Debate around H-1B visas remains heated, with figures like Vice President JD Vance denouncing the system, while supporters like Elon Musk emphasize its role in attracting global talent. This program is vital for industries like tech and engineering, helping maintain U.S. innovation leadership.
