Suspect Detained in Chicago Employee’s Fatal Shooting

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Chicago city employee found dead earlier this year on the city’s far North Side.

Darreon Plummer, 33, is accused of killing 36-year-old D’aJ Flowers on February 6 in their shared residence at the 6900 block of North Bell Avenue in the West Ridge area, according to official reports. Authorities issued a first-degree murder charge against Plummer on August 26.

Flowers’ family identified Plummer as her boyfriend. The Cook County medical examiner’s office reported that she died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Demone Flowers, D’aJ’s brother, revealed that police communicated recent developments to the family. He stated that Plummer was detained in Washington state, just north of Seattle, although a Chicago police spokesperson did not confirm this, stating only that the investigation continues.

Records indicate Plummer is currently held by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office in Washington. He was booked on September 1 and appeared before a judge on September 2 for a warrant identification hearing, signing a waiver for extradition the same day.

As of Tuesday morning, Plummer remains in Washington, with no clear timeline for his return to Chicago.

“My sister was never violent or malicious,” said Demone Flowers, 35. “She always helped others, just like in her job as a dispatcher.”

Following her death, Cook County Crime Stoppers offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer.

Before her passing, D’aJ Flowers worked in the Freedom of Information Act division, Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, and as a senior administrative assistant, said OEMC spokeswoman Mary May. She previously worked for the Chicago Department of Public Health and was seeking a promotion at the time of her death, according to her brother.

“She was a jack of all trades,” he said.

D’aJ was not the first family member affected by violence this year. In July, their mother, Surbezz Clark, was killed in a shooting near West 76th and South Halsted streets in Auburn Gresham. Another person died in that incident, and two others were injured. No arrests have been made.

“Our family has grown closer. We stay motivated through work and memories of my sister,” Demone Flowers shared. “She never wallowed in self-pity, and that inspires me daily. I keep her photos around and talk to her every day.”
