Aaron Judge Makes Anticipated Return to Boost Yankees’ Lineup

Aaron Judge returned to the MLB batter’s box at Petco Park, wielding his bat after a 96-day absence. Though only a practice session, the sight symbolized a major step forward for Judge and the New York Yankees. His prolonged absence due to a stress fracture in his right rib is ending, and Judge’s imminent return is a much-needed boost for his team.

The Yankees activated Judge on Monday, just before their series against the Colorado Rockies. He was at the U.S. Open watching Coco Gauff when the announcement came. Judge’s presence in the lineup again is key, as emphasized by outfielder Spencer Jones. He noted that Judge’s return will significantly enhance the team’s offensive power, which they have had to compensate for in his absence.

During Judge’s absence, the Yankees managed a 45-39 record since early June. They relied heavily on their pitching staff, which posted a league-leading 3.24 ERA. However, the offense suffered, ranking poorly compared to other teams. Without Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees had to find new strategies to cope with the loss of their usual firepower. Before May 31, they led in home runs, but that dropped significantly afterward.

Judge’s leadership has been sorely missed, especially as the Yankees went from scoring high in the first inning to recording the fewest runs in the same period during his absence. This had cascading effects on their gameplay; their fly-ball and ground-ball rates shifted unfavorably without him.

Players like Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger, who typically hit near Judge in the lineup, have seen a decline in their performance metrics. Bellinger acknowledged the advantage of having Judge back, suggesting that his presence changes the dynamics for all hitters.

The Yankees’ close game strategy has taxed their bullpen, with relievers like Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick playing extensive innings. The lack of offensive blowouts was partly due to the left-handed-heavy lineup, which opposing teams exploited with left-handed pitchers. Judge’s right-handed batting will introduce more balance.

Despite his injury, Judge remained a pivotal figure in the Yankees’ strategy. Catcher Austin Wells highlighted Judge’s role in providing valuable insights on opponents, benefiting the team’s preparation and in-game adjustments. Judge has also been a mentor, sharing his experience and advice with teammates such as Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Spencer Jones.

With 19 games remaining, the Yankees are trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by four games in the American League East. Judge, often regarded by manager Aaron Boone as “the best player in the world,” is returning at a crucial time. His comeback sparks hope for the Yankees as they aim for a late push in the division title race.
