Cait Conley Supports Impeachment of War Secretary Pete Hegseth

Cait Conley, a Democratic congressional candidate and 16-year Army combat veteran, is challenging Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Conley expressed her support for impeaching War Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of compromising U.S. national security.

When anchor Dana Bash questioned whether, if elected, Conley would support Hegseth’s removal, Conley affirmed, “He has been a risk to American national security and an embarrassment to the office. I fully support his removal because his actions are failing those who serve this country.”

Conley’s statement highlighted her belief that Hegseth is a “hazard to American national security.” This declaration has stirred conversation, particularly as Conley now faces scrutiny over her stance on Hegseth, who is also under criticism from House Democrats for alleged high crimes and misdemeanors.

The Lawler campaign, represented by campaign manager Ciro Riccardi, has capitalized on Conley’s impeachment stance. Riccardi’s statement criticized Conley’s ties to Democratic Socialists of America and labeled her as extreme, citing her impeachment position as evidence.

Democratic efforts to impeach Hegseth began with formal articles over his handling of several sensitive issues, including military actions related to Iran and the use of Signal for military communications. However, Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson dismissed these accusations as headline-chasing and asserted Hegseth’s ongoing focus on the Pentagon’s mission.

According to Wilson, Hegseth’s role has been successful in achieving the president’s objectives, despite accusations that he failed to protect the U.S. Hegseth himself has also criticized media portrayals, suggesting they rely on accounts from dissatisfied former employees and aim to tarnish reputations.

Pressure on Hegseth has expanded beyond party lines, with outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis urging President Donald Trump to find new Pentagon leadership. Tillis raised concerns about empowering military talent and modernization plans, given the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who reportedly had disagreements with Hegseth.

Despite this, the White House has reiterated its support for Hegseth, asserting his effectiveness in leadership. On leaving office, Driscoll praised the Army’s progress under Hegseth, countering claims of tension.

Fox News Digital reached out for comments from Hegseth, the White House, and Conley, but no immediate response was received.
