Crown Point Triumphs in Intense Showdown Against Merrillville

On a hot Friday night, Jaden Saddler made crucial plays for Crown Point. The senior cornerback recovered a muffed punt in the third quarter and intercepted a pass in the fourth. These moments were vital in the Duneland Athletic Conference match at Merrillville, featuring the Region’s two top teams.

“It felt great, but I know I couldn’t do it alone because my teammates were there,” Saddler shared. “They supported me when I made mistakes.”

Crown Point’s collective defense helped them win 23-14, limiting the powerful offense led by Merrillville’s quarterback, Michael Hill Jr.

Crown Point coach Craig Buzea praised the team’s defense. “A lot of hard work,” he noted. “We can’t simulate their play style, but our kids executed well.” Although Hill posed challenges, they held Merrillville to 14 points, creating a path to victory.

Saddler responded after a halftime challenge from Buzea. “He did get on me about my performance,” Saddler acknowledged. Despite limited play last season, Saddler showed growth with an interception against Indianapolis Pike and contributions in early games.

“I’ve been training since last year,” Saddler explained. “This doesn’t just happen. It’s hard work.” His efforts impressed teammate AJ Summers, who described him as a dedicated leader.

The game was tied 14-14 before Hill exited following an injury. Merrillville’s backup quarterback took over, leading to Crown Point securing a 16-14 lead through a safety.

Ethan Ziolkowski’s 46-yard catch-and-run touchdown raised the score to 23-14. Then, Brody Hood forced a fumble, recovered by Ben Clark. Hill returned, but injuries limited his effectiveness. He totaled 217 passing yards and two touchdowns to Curtis Walker, who tallied nine catches for 164 yards.

Tyce Custy had two touchdown passes, including one to Kingston Connelly. Brayden Schutt added 103 rushing yards and a 70-yard touchdown.

“We committed to fighting for each other,” said Saddler. “We didn’t all show up in the first or second halves, but we played together.” Crown Point’s win extended their regular-season streak to 39 games, marking their fifth straight victory over Merrillville, who returned to 6A.

“This isn’t our best version,” Buzea stated. “We’ll improve, expecting to see Merrillville again. Many teams better than them would be a surprise. They’re formidable.”
