High-Profile Trial Begins in England: Accused Husband and Others Face Serious Charges

A husband facing accusations of raping and sexually abusing his wife is set to stand trial in England. The proceedings include a dozen other men linked to the alleged crimes. The man, in his 60s, hails from Stockport in northwest England. He is accused of conspiring with others to drug and assault his wife while she was unconscious, as British police stated in June. The trial will take place in Manchester.

For legal reasons, the man’s identity remains confidential to safeguard his wife’s anonymity. According to CBS News partner BBC News, he faces a total of 48 charges. Initially, he denied all charges but later admitted guilt to 15. These include five counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, six counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sharing intimate photos or film, according to Greater Manchester police.

Despite admitting some charges, he continues to refute 11 counts of rape, two counts of attempted rape, seven counts of assault by penetration, and other serious allegations, according to the U.K’s Crown Prosecution Service. The other men involved are charged with crimes ranging from participation in sexual abuse to facilitating it by administering substances to render the victim unconscious.

The men on trial range in age from 28 to 73, prosecutors informed CBS News. The case has been compared to that of Gisèle Pelicot, who gained international attention when she testified against her ex-husband and numerous others in a 2024 mass rape trial in France. Pelicot publicly waived her anonymity during the four-month proceedings, which ended with guilty verdicts for all involved, including a maximum 20-year sentence for Dominique Pelicot, her ex-husband.
