Family Finds Relief as Arrest is Made in 14-Year-Old’s Death

The family of a 14-year-old girl from Washington, D.C., Zytina Mason-Brown, experienced a sense of relief following the arrest of a 17-year-old male suspect in her death. Initially thought to be a self-inflicted accident, Mason-Brown’s death led her family to continuously argue against the initial police findings.

Mason-Brown was shot on May 21, 2025, while inside an apartment at the Benning Courts Pentacle complex. She had been an eighth grader with aspirations of becoming a beautician and real estate agent. Police initially suggested the incident was an accidental shooting during the recording of a social media video.

However, doubts from her family remained persistent, and by August 2025, the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially classified the death as a homicide. This reclassification was aligned with her family’s long-standing assertion that Mason-Brown did not commit suicide.

Mason-Brown’s grandmother, Michelle Brown, commented on the arrest, conveying a sense of satisfaction rather than happiness, acknowledging that justice was being pursued.

Her aunt, Dawna Cooke, expressed gratitude towards the D.C. Metropolitan Police for their continued efforts, resulting in the apprehension of the suspect.

Specifics regarding the suspect’s details remain undisclosed due to juvenile privacy laws.
