Aaron Donald, a future Hall of Fame defensive tackle, has ended his retirement and rejoined the Los Angeles Rams after nearly two and a half years away from the NFL. On Sunday, he reportedly signed a one-year, $20 million deal.
Rumors about Donald’s comeback had circulated for months. Reports indicated he was maintaining his fitness with the team and staying in touch with key figures, including head coach Sean McVay. The prospect of Donald teaming up with Myles Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, seemed more like a hopeful fantasy than a real possibility.
The Rams were already seen as strong contenders for the Super Bowl, but Donald’s return strengthens their position as the team to beat in 2026. This is daunting for other teams, especially as Donald feels as capable as ever.
“Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? 100%. If I didn’t feel like that, I wouldn’t be here,” Donald remarked during his first practice back with the team. He added, “I’ve trained extensively, focusing on conditioning and football drills. I analyzed every move, every cut, every hip flip in detail. To me, I seem no different, perhaps even cleaner.”
Donald, now 35, was last seen in action in 2023, delivering standout performance that included 53 combined tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits, and eight sacks. His statistics ranked among the best in his field.
His retirement, despite his high level of play, remained puzzling. The Rams have been close to clinching the title in recent years, sparking speculation about what could have happened if Donald had continued to play. Now, fans can look forward to his impact on the field again.
If Donald feels reborn, as he claims, the rest of the NFL has every reason to brace for what could be an intense season.
