Ed Markey Ahead in Democratic Primary
Senator Ed Markey is leading Representative Seth Moulton in two new polls for the Democratic Senate primary in Massachusetts. The incumbent faces a generational challenge as he seeks to maintain his seat amid calls for fresh leadership. This comes as an anti-incumbent sentiment impacts Democratic primaries, with several long-serving members of Congress losing to newcomers.
Democrats continue to grapple with questions regarding the age of their leading figures. Concerns intensified after President Joe Biden announced a second-term run, leading to criticism following a key debate with Donald Trump in June 2024. The debate led to Biden’s withdrawal, boosting Trump’s return to the White House. Despite calls for younger leadership, Markey appears positioned to overcome Moulton’s challenge, according to polls from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Suffolk University.
Age vs. Ideology
Moulton has centered his campaign on Markey’s age and the need for new leadership. In contrast, Markey emphasizes policy and ideological differences, portraying himself as aligned with voters on issues like healthcare. Known for his progressive stance, Markey contrasts with Moulton’s moderate position and criticisms of party policies, such as transgender rights and Medicare for All. This ideological focus is atypical for primaries, often marked by more progressive challengers.
Polls show Markey’s substantial lead over Moulton. The UMass Amherst poll places Markey 28 points ahead with a 60% to 32% lead among 800 registered voters, including 445 Democratic primary voters. The Suffolk University poll shows a narrower 15-point lead for Markey, capturing 52% support compared to Moulton’s 38%, with 10% undecided.
Moulton’s Challenge
Tatishe Nteta, UMass poll director, suggests Moulton’s focus on age isn’t resonating. He highlights the need for concrete reasons to change leadership, noting Markey’s approval among Democratic primary voters remains high. While Moulton criticizes public polling accuracy, he claims Markey’s actions, like skipping forums, signal vulnerabilities. Moulton’s camp argues Massachusetts desires change.
Markey’s historical strength includes overcoming challenges like Joe Kennedy III in 2020, where progressive alignment played a decisive role. His progressive policy endorsements and younger voter backing fortified his position. Nevertheless, Moulton maintains recognition from his past presidential bid and is not easily dismissed.
Race Dynamics and Polls
In contrast to other races where younger, more progressive challengers target established moderates, Markey, an established figure, is perceived as more progressive. Voter perceptions and ideological alignment could favor him in a predominantly progressive state. However, Moulton’s moderate views, including comments on transgender athletes, present issues among Democratic voters.
Recent efforts saw Markey’s lead slightly challenged. A University of New Hampshire poll shows Markey up by 6 points, while an earlier Emerson College poll reflects a 5-point lead. These results underscore the race’s dynamic as Moulton seeks to energize his voter base, making voter turnout crucial.
Upcoming Primary
With the primary scheduled for September 1, 2026, Moulton aims to capitalize on turnout to secure victory, facing an ‘uphill climb’ as experts suggest. Attorney John Deaton is the expected Republican nominee, but analysts predict a Democratic advantage based on Massachusetts’ historical leanings and Trump’s declining popularity. Forecasters label the race as securely Democratic.
