The Auburn Tigers have recently welcomed a new wide receiver to their team, Tray Taylor. His arrival is creating quite a buzz, not due to his gameplay, but because of his size. Taylor, who previously played for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Troy Trojans, now dons the Tigers’ colors, a fact highlighted in video content shared by AuburnTigers.com senior writer Jeff Shearer.
According to Sports Reference, Taylor is listed as 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds. However, Auburn’s own records suggest he is 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds. This discrepancy seems more credible and aligns with visuals available from recent fall camps.
Fans have taken to social media to voice their thoughts, often humorously referencing Taylor’s stature. Comments such as “Thought this was a coach’s son practicing for fun,” by @WilliiamHBonney and “Mighty mouse!” from @tracey_lynnee reflect the light-hearted banter surrounding him.
Despite his size, Taylor is expected to make a significant impact for the Tigers. Last year, during his time with Troy, he achieved 30 catches for nearly 500 yards and scored three touchdowns. Taylor also demonstrated versatility by running 10 times for 52 yards and adding another touchdown. He is particularly experienced in returning kicks and punts, a skill he honed while at Coastal Carolina.
Taylor’s opportunity with Auburn comes as the team is down a wide receiver. Duke Smith was dismissed in June after allegedly violating team rules. This staffing change, along with a new directional focus under coach Alex Golesh, provides Taylor with a platform to showcase his talent.
Previously, Taylor shone as a second-team JUCO All-American in 2023. He attained this accolade after catching 39 passes for 850 yards and nine touchdowns for Tyler Junior College, according to Peter Rauterkus of AL.com.
Peter Rauterkus adds, “If nothing else, Taylor gives the Tigers better numbers in practice, but was a contributor for Troy last year.” This contribution is crucial, especially as Auburn adjusts, following the prized player Cam Coleman’s transfer to the Texas Longhorns.
In big programs such as Auburn, competition for playing time is fierce. Yet, Taylor’s career shows he consistently produces results. He now faces the challenge of proving his worth at the highest level of college football, hoping to craft the final chapter in a remarkable college journey.
