In an unexpected turn during the Blue Jays’ 3-1 win over the New York Yankees, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. experienced a challenging moment. The incident took place in the sixth inning at the Rogers Centre.
Trailing 1-0, the Blue Jays had Nathan Lukes on second base and Guerrero on first, with George Springer batting. A ground ball by Springer to Yankees’ third baseman Ryan McMahon led to a series of errors.
McMahon’s attempt to complete a double play resulted in a throw to first baseman Luis Garcia Jr.’s miss. Guerrero took advantage and headed for third base. A throw from Garcia to third resulted in an unfortunate collision.
Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr., not expecting the throw, collided with Guerrero, causing Guerrero’s helmet to fly off.
Despite appearing disoriented, Guerrero managed to score, tying the game. He was later removed from the game, with Manager John Schneider citing Guerrero’s headache from the collision as a precaution.
The incident added two errors to McMahon and Garcia’s statistics, which McMahon acknowledged. “Just didn’t work out,” he remarked, recognizing the impact on the score.
Guerrero, who signed a 14-year, $500 million contract extension, has been struggling this season with a .263 average and fewer home runs than usual. His absence would affect the Blue Jays’ lineup as they pursue the American League Wild-Card spot.
The Blue Jays, standing at 60-64, plan to face the Yankees again. They hope Guerrero can return to the lineup.
