Kim Mathers was incarcerated by a district court judge on Thursday for failing to comply with drug and alcohol testing requirements. Mathers, aged 51, from Chesterfield Township, questioned her attorney about the duration of her imprisonment in a voice that was audible to others in the courtroom. This occurred soon after Judge William Hackel agreed with the prosecutor’s request to revoke her bonds for three cases due to noncompliance.
Judge Hackel, presiding over the 42-II District Court in New Baltimore, mentioned that Mathers could potentially be released to an in-patient treatment facility. Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Joseph McCarthy reminded Judge Hackel of his earlier advice to Mathers to seek treatment, which she had not yet pursued. McCarthy expressed the prosecution’s concern about the nature and frequency of Mathers’ violations, emphasizing the risk she poses to herself and the community. He requested her immediate remand to jail.
Mathers’ attorney, Camilla Barkovic, disagreed with the prosecution’s assertions, although she did not challenge the violations of bond conditions. Jeremy Stradley from EMS Testing and Freedom Bail Bonds was available to testify but was not needed after Barkovic’s agreement to the stipulation. Barkovic later claimed outside the courtroom that Mathers was being unfairly treated by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
Judge Hackel revoked Mathers’ bonds, which included two $10,000 bonds and one $5,000 bond. Specific details about the violations were not provided due to the attorney’s agreement. Mathers, formerly married to rapper Eminem, encountered legal issues beginning in February with a drunk driving arrest. She faced further charges related to another drunk driving incident in May, just two days after pleading to the earlier charge. In June, a bench warrant was issued following her failure to attend a court hearing.
Another incident on July 11 led to her admission to McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens after collapsing at home, reportedly due to a “Hemorrhage/Laceration.” She allegedly kicked a Chesterfield Township officer during this event, leading to charges of resisting arrest and causing injury, both considered felonies. She is scheduled for a probable cause conference on September 3 for that case.
On the day of the jailing, Mathers was to receive sentencing following her no contest plea on May 11. This plea involved charges of operating while impaired and failing to report an accident from a February 16 traffic crash. The incident involved her driving while impaired with children present in her vehicle. Mathers was also set to face a pretrial hearing in her latest drunk driving charge. This charge is a felony, being her third offense, after she collided with another vehicle while operating a Kia in Chesterfield.
