During a high school football practice in Arkansas, a player at Maumelle High School discovered a 2-foot-long venomous snake inside his helmet. The unexpected encounter occurred after the student noticed an unusual movement in his headgear following warmups.
The player, concerned about the movement, took his helmet to an assistant coach. Upon inspection, they found a cottonmouth snake nestled behind some padding. The Maumelle Animal Shelter confirmed this unsettling discovery, identifying the snake as a cottonmouth, a highly venomous pit viper known in Arkansas.
Getting the snake out of the helmet wasn’t easy. Police officers had to use water to coax the snake out and into a bag. Animal services technicians, who arrived shortly afterward, safely relocated the snake to a wooded area far from the school grounds.
Chris Davis, the animal services director, expressed relief that the player was unharmed despite wearing the helmet for almost an hour. “It was unreal,” Davis stated, emphasizing the unusual nature of the incident.
After switching helmets, the player resumed practice. However, the head coach used the incident to remind the team to always inspect their gear thoroughly before use. He advised checking for insects or potentially dangerous animals.
The Maumelle Animal Shelter also highlighted the importance of this precaution in a Facebook post. They warned that snakes and other critters could find their way into dark, enclosed spaces like helmets, shoes, and bags left undisturbed.
“Before putting on your helmet, shoes, gloves, or any outdoor gear, always give it a quick check first,” the shelter advised. “It only takes a few seconds and could prevent a very scary encounter—or worse.”
