In Alabama, voters are participating in primary elections for four of the state’s seven congressional districts. These elections are occurring under a newly redrawn map, which tends to favor the Republican Party. The redistricting followed a Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act, subsequent to which one of two majority-Black districts was removed.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, a Republican, delayed the primary elections in these four districts, pending the Supreme Court ruling. As a result, these elections are only now taking place under the new map.
President Donald Trump has given his endorsement to two candidates in these primaries. He supports former congressman Jerry Carl and Rhett Marques, a current Alabama state representative, in two of the newly outlined districts.
