You can now listen to Fox News articles! Jim Nantz, renowned CBS Sports play-by-play commentator, addressed Tony Romo’s OWI arrest in July. This incident has led to a change in Nantz’s broadcasting partner as the NFL season approaches.
Nantz and Romo have collaborated since the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback secured a significant 10-year contract with CBS Sports. Romo was to be the top NFL analyst, working with legendary broadcaster Nantz.
During the ‘NFL on CBS’ Media Day, Nantz was questioned about Romo’s situation and whether CBS Sports had informed him of Romo’s status for the NFL season. Nantz stated, “I really was just laying low,” mentioning his commitment to numerous golf events. He expressed a focus on current responsibilities while maintaining communication with Romo.
“I had golf events to do and I knew they had a lot to, you know, look at, sort out. But I made my mind up because we have this late flurry of golf events on the schedule. I was going to communicate with Tony, which we have, back and forth. …I just kind of wanted to focus on what’s in front of me, and that’s what I’ve done,” said Nantz.
Romo was arrested by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, accused of operating while intoxicated. He also faced charges of having an open alcohol container in his vehicle and unsafe passing. CBS Sports President remarked that Romo’s situation is ‘evolving’ and that a ‘final decision’ has yet to be reached.
CBS President Berson emphasized the importance of maintaining the network’s image and brand, suggesting they prioritize their presentation and product. He assured that the network has a strong group of professionals ready to step up as needed.
The announcement that former Houston Texans star J.J. Watt will replace Romo alongside Nantz brings a new dynamic. Despite the situation, Nantz expressed his continued friendship with Romo, highlighting their long-standing relationship.
“Tony is a great friend of mine and has been for years,” Nantz noted. “He and I go back to 2011 when he got married, I was invited to his wedding. So, this was not someone in 2017 when he entered the booth I was just getting to know for the first time. So, he’s a great friend, continues to be, always will be.”
Romo, under a massive 10-year, $180 million agreement with CBS, is still due $72 million. Reports indicate doubts about his future with CBS even before his arrest, with discussions about his preparation increasing. These concerns have led some critics to question his chemistry with Nantz.
There is also speculation regarding a morals clause in Romo’s contract that CBS might use due to the arrest. His legal team is expected to contest any such move, considering the financial stakes involved.
Romo has a court hearing set for September 21, days after CBS Sports’ initial NFL broadcast featuring Nantz and Watt. The Super Bowl, scheduled for February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, marks another significant event for CBS Sports.
