49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Discusses Recovery and Views on Driving and Concussions

In his first press conference since a severe car accident, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed his plans to return to the sideline for the team’s opening preseason game. The crash left him with multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a hand, and facial lacerations. Shanahan now harbors a shifted perspective on Tesla’s autopilot feature and the importance of road safety.

Shanahan admitted to being comfortable with autopilot technology after using it for nearly a decade. However, the crash made him realize the need for constant vigilance when driving. “At 20 miles an hour on autopilot, I felt secure,” Shanahan disclosed, emphasizing that it’s crucial to remain attentive. He stressed that driving should not rely solely on technology, highlighting the partnership required between driver and vehicle.

“Dropping a phone that falls to the back seat, forcing me to divert my gaze, is risky,” Shanahan stated. “I’ve trusted autopilot, but this incident served as a reminder never to take my eyes off the road.”

Though Shanahan continues to support Tesla, the experience taught him valuable lessons about personal responsibility and safety. Additionally, his accident shed light on player safety concerns, particularly regarding concussions—a recurring issue in the NFL.

Recovering from his own concussion has provided Shanahan with insights into the struggles players face. He acknowledged, “Labels like ‘mild’ or ‘severe’ don’t fully capture the individual experience. Each case is unique.” This understanding led Shanahan to have greater empathy for players navigating the league’s concussion protocol. He now appreciates the uncertainty and difficulty players encounter during recovery.

Shanahan also shared that he continues to feel the lingering effects of his concussion, citing headaches and fatigue as persistent symptoms. However, he noted improvement with noise sensitivity during practice sessions, moving past the initial discomfort.

Despite these challenges, Shanahan remains committed to his role, continuously learning from his personal experiences and those of his players.
