Kaptur is 80 years old and the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives.
In the video, Kaptur mentioned she and her staff member Keegan Zimmerman were involved in the accident en route to a church service. The incident occurred due to a ‘hit-skip’ crash near Detroit and Central avenues in Toledo. This term refers to the failure of a driver to stop after a collision under Ohio law.
‘I am grateful for the thousands of good wishes,’ Kaptur stated in the video. She was seated in a wheelchair and appeared to be in an office setting. Her remarks highlighted the significant impact the support received had on her recovery.
Kaptur, a 22-term House member since 1983, reassured viewers she was on the path to recovery. She expressed appreciation for the efforts of first responders and medical personnel at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, praising their dedication to saving lives.
With Congress on its August recess, Kaptur has more time to recuperate before returning to her duties in Washington, D.C.
Despite her current focus on recovery, Kaptur is seeking her 23rd term this November, running against former Ohio State Rep. Derek Merrin in a rematch. She narrowly defeated Merrin in the 2024 election, avoiding a recount by a slim margin.
Kaptur’s message concluded with a touch of warmth as she showed viewers a handmade get-well card from a child named Avery. The card featured a drawing of a dog named Charlie, adding a personal touch to her communication.
