Progressive Representative Jill Tokuda, a Democrat from Hawaii, secured a decisive victory in her primary election. This win sets the stage for a contest with Republican state Senator Brenton Awa in the November elections. Tokuda is aiming for her third term as the representative for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. This district encompasses the entire state except for the island of Oahu, although it includes rural and suburban areas of Oahu as well.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has rated the district as D+12. This suggests a strong likelihood of continued Democratic control in the upcoming midterm elections.
Rep. Jill Tokuda defeated three other candidates to clinch the Democratic nomination. None of these challengers posed a serious risk to her campaign despite ongoing intraparty tensions that have led to the defeat of several House Democrat incumbents nationwide. Tokuda’s colleague, Representative Ed Case, also from Hawaii, encountered a significant primary challenge from a more progressive opponent. Case is generally considered more moderate than Tokuda.
An incident involving one of Tokuda’s opponents drew some controversy during the race. This opponent was arrested after a violent incident captured on video at Keawakapu Beach. Kirill Basin allegedly threatened someone who asked him to lower the volume of his music, according to Honolulu Civil Beat. Video footage reportedly shows Basin swinging a beach chair during a confrontation at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei, Hawaii. A violent altercation occurred when a bystander intervened, and Basin reportedly brandished a knife.
Responding to the incident, Tokuda expressed that the video was “disturbing”. She stated, “Any individual, whether you’re running for office or a public citizen, you need to be held accountable for your actions.”
