Some workout days leave you feeling energized and successful, while others seem like a chore. A structured workout routine helps maintain consistency, but it can become repetitive and boring over time. Personal trainer Luka Hocevar shares that when progress stalls, motivation can dwindle.
Though regular exercise holds great importance, it comes with its own challenges. Data from The Pew Research Center indicates that although 57 percent of Americans value exercise highly, only 28 percent feel they excel in maintaining it.
Why Do Workouts Lose Their Efficacy?
Initially, exercising can feel rewarding with rapid progress. However, over time, noticeable changes can slow down. Hocevar, who has coached over 4,000 clients and established the Vigor Ground personal training gym, identifies “lack of structure and progression” as the primary cause for workouts losing impact.
You might initially see results without a structured plan, but soon hit a plateau. Long-term success requires a plan with clear progression metrics to track improvement.
Progressively increasing workout goals over weeks can help maintain effectiveness.
Why Do People Lose Motivation?
Hocevar believes the biggest source of workout boredom stems from undefined goals. He states, “Without a deep reason for health and body transformation, surface goals like losing a few pounds fail to sustain motivation when challenges arise.”
He ties this to self-determination theory, which highlights the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness to maintain motivation. Autonomy means choosing your exercises, competence involves honing skills and tracking progress, while relatedness creates connections with others through shared exercise experiences.
Is Routine the Problem?
For some individuals, a consistent routine is crucial, allowing continuous adherence to a workout plan. Yet, others need variety. Hocevar refers to these individuals as “novelty seekers,” who thrive on regularly changing exercises, equipment, and circuits.
For novelty seekers, we maintain some staple exercises while introducing new methods in each session to keep engagement high. Personal trainers must identify clients’ preferred training approaches.
How To Start Seeing Results Again
If stuck, Hocevar advises seeking a coach or engaging in a new training program with a proven method. This can offer valuable insights for long-term improvement.
Don’t view workout plans as rigid schedules. Instead, see them as opportunities to explore different exercises. Hocevar emphasizes trying new sports or equipment and taking on fresh challenges.
Find joy in exercise by trying new things. Consistency is key. Consider joining a gym or fitness community to gain a sense of belonging and accountability.
