The Trump administration is advancing its efforts to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over mortgage fraud allegations, which she denies. The Supreme Court allowed Cook to keep her job while contesting her termination.
In June, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that Cook, nominated to the Fed’s Board of Governors by President Joe Biden, could stay in her position during her lawsuit. The Trump administration is appealing a lower-court decision that favored Cook.
Chief Justice John Roberts noted that President Donald Trump is not barred from attempting once more to fire Cook, provided she is informed properly and given an opportunity to defend herself. Trump stated his intention to take action promptly.
A recent letter from White House aide Dan Scavino to Cook, obtained by The Associated Press, conveyed that Trump is considering her removal. The letter follows the Supreme Court’s demand for appropriate notice, giving her until August 26 to respond.
The allegation against Cook involves a criminal referral by Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. He accused her of committing mortgage fraud by labeling two homes in Michigan and Georgia as “primary residences.” This provides buyers with benefits like reduced mortgage rates.
Cook has defended her actions, indicating that the charges are politically driven due to her refusal to adjust interest rates for political gain. Her lawyer, Abbe Lowell, emphasized that Cook primarily resided in Michigan since 2005. The Atlanta condo was called a “primary residence” in refinancing paperwork; however, a previous document identified it as a vacation home. Cook also described it as a second home in Fed filings.
The latest White House letter reiterates the previous year’s accusations. Lowell criticized the renewed attempt to remove Cook, citing a lack of valid grounds. He affirmed that they would contest the effort to safeguard Cook’s role and the Federal Reserve’s autonomy.
