Kevin Gausman continues his pursuit of a World Series win with the Chicago Cubs, an aim that has driven him throughout his 14-year major league career. Last year he played in the World Series with Toronto, starting Game 6. Despite their efforts, Toronto fell short against the Los Angeles Dodgers, losing Game 7 in extra innings. The Cubs acquired Gausman with the belief that his experience and track record could help push the team further.
Gausman remains focused on returning to the World Series, particularly with the Cubs. ‘It’s an experience that’s hard to describe,’ Gausman stated. ‘Playing in the World Series is something every player dreams of, and after getting a taste, all you want is to get back.’
The question now is how manager Craig Counsell will handle a Cubs rotation that previously lacked depth but now has an abundance. Gausman is set to make his debut for the Cubs on Friday night against the Kansas City Royals. He aims to improve his performance. Since a difficult game on June 19, Gausman has recorded a 6.47 ERA with 20 walks over 40 1/3 innings.
‘I need to be an innings eater here,’ Gausman noted. ‘That’s why I’m here, to start games and go deep.’
Jed Hoyer, President of baseball operations, has long been interested in Gausman, recalling the player’s early days in Baltimore. Hoyer referred to Gausman as a ‘white whale’ target for the franchise. Gausman is eager to have the Cubs’ top-tier defense backing him as he takes the Kauffman Stadium mound.
Dansby Swanson, who played with Gausman in Atlanta in 2018 and 2019, praises his former teammate’s ability to maintain a steady pace under pressure. Gausman’s delivery and pitching style often challenge batters. Swanson admired Gausman’s resilience and growth despite setbacks, noting his progression into a highly successful pitcher.
This season, the Cubs’ pitching staff has yet to see a starter reach the eighth inning. Adding Gausman alongside Clay Holmes, who is scheduled to start on Saturday, aims to alleviate some of the strain on the bullpen, which has faced challenges due to injuries.
Gausman reconnected with former Blue Jays teammates at Wrigley Field this Thursday. Had he not been traded, he would have started against the Cubs, a matchup he anticipated since June. Instead, he will pitch on Friday, bolstering the Cubs as they continue a strong stretch.
On joining the Cubs, Gausman said, ‘I’ve been part of teams that needed support at the deadline but didn’t get it. Joining a team bringing in players is energizing. Though it feels like this team is already on the right path, I’m excited to contribute.’
