Vice President JD Vance, leading President Donald Trump’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, announced the identification of $230 billion in suspected fraud. Speaking on Wednesday, he highlighted the prevention of $56 billion in fraudulent payments which have been diverted from fraudsters to those in genuine need.
During a task-force roundtable with lawmakers, Vance emphasized the necessity for reforms to combat fraud effectively. He expressed concerns about the lack of transparency when federal funds are distributed to states, particularly regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Vance stated, “The federal government lacks visibility into who ultimately receives these benefits.”
“If California allocates food stamp benefits to an illegal alien or a violent criminal, the federal government has no visibility, and sometimes the states themselves are unaware,” he said.
Vance called for legislative action that would mandate data sharing between state and federal governments to enhance oversight.
Beyond transparency, Vance suggested implementing stricter penalties for those convicted of fraud. In agreement, White House deputy chief of staff for policy and Homeland Security advisor Stephen Miller advocated for mandatory minimum sentences. He urged for substantial prison terms, asserting that such measures would significantly deter criminal behavior. “Prosecuting hundreds or thousands of cases can curb the misconduct of millions,” Miller remarked.
