Brandon Aiyuk’s situation with the San Francisco 49ers remains uncertain. As training camp begins, the team has not provided any updates on the wide receiver. Aiyuk currently remains on the reserve/left squad list, a status he has held since late 2025. After missing last season due to a prolonged disagreement with the team, his next step could involve applying to the NFL for reinstatement to potentially return in 2026.
Alternatively, Aiyuk could advance the process by reporting to training camp or notifying the 49ers of his intention to do so. The strained relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers has been ongoing for around a year.
In July of the previous year, the situation escalated when San Francisco voided the remaining guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract. This decision followed Aiyuk’s failure to participate in rehabilitation efforts for knee injuries, including tears in the ACL, MCL, and meniscus.
Aiyuk has seemingly addressed the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team in various social media posts, contributing to the ongoing discussions about his status. Former NFL wide receiver Roddy White has also commented on the matter. White, known for his career with the Atlanta Falcons, criticized the 49ers’ handling of Aiyuk’s recovery process.
“I think this situation has been handled wrongly by the 49ers,” White shared with Hard Rock Bet. “They should’ve been more patient with Aiyuk and his situation. When you have a guy who is angry and just wants to leave, it’s hard to get any compensation for him.”
The 49ers’ recent decision to reinstate Deebo Samuel seems to have prompted a cryptic reaction from Aiyuk, who posted on Instagram, “San Fran wanna see a real reunion?”
Aiyuk’s posts have not been solely focused on San Francisco, as he has also criticized the NFL Players Association. Despite expressing interest in joining the Commanders, this possibility appears to have diminished following Aiyuk’s public comments about Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels.
In response, Daniels recently stated that he and Aiyuk have resolved any issues privately. They were teammates at Arizona State in 2019 during their college careers.
Last month, general manager John Lynch emphasized that the 49ers remain focused on the players present at training camp. “I’m personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players who are here,” Lynch announced on July 25.
The team’s wide receiver lineup experienced an early setback as Ricky Pearsall was moved to injured reserve due to PCL swelling in his right knee, after appearing to be a promising addition to the 49ers’ offense.
In 2024, Aiyuk played in seven games before his season was cut short by injuries. Prior to that, he had his most successful season with 1,342 receiving yards, earning him second-team All-Pro recognition.
