Late Sunday, Cuba’s electricity grid failed, plunging the nation into darkness. This incident marks another in a series of frequent outages. The state-owned grid operator, Union Electrica de Cuba, reported the event but provided no further details on social media platforms X and Facebook.
The grid collapse follows three significant outages in July. An ongoing oil blockade imposed by the U.S. complicates the situation further, straining Cuba’s already aging energy infrastructure.
Challenges in securing fuel imports intensify pressure on Cuba’s power system. The nation lost a critical fuel source due to the blockade enforced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. This blockade aligns with the dismissal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by Washington on January 3. Historically, Venezuela served as Cuba’s main oil supplier. Additionally, Mexico has ceased exports to Cuba amid heightened U.S. sanctions.
The ongoing power issues coincide with cautious reforms in Cuba’s energy sector. The country faces fuel shortages and severe sanctions. In response, Havana has permitted foreign-backed ventures for fuel imports. It has also allowed nearly 200 Cuban businesses to engage in wholesale fuel distribution.
