The Dodgers made a significant trade to acquire two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts shared that he received a positive update on the trade discussions from President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman before their game against the Red Sox. “I heard that it was pretty much done,” Roberts said, although medical checks were still pending completion.
Despite feeling optimistic, Friedman withheld full reassurance until receiving final confirmation from the Tigers. He remarked, “I had no idea and was trying to emotionally hedge. I wasn’t getting too high or too low until we actually found out.” Fortunately, the finalization came with no issues. At the trade’s conclusion, three Dodger prospects were exchanged for Skubal: outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-handed pitcher River Ryan, and right-hander Brady Smith.
Though they initially projected a subdued trade deadline approach, the Dodgers were determined to pursue Skubal, as many scouts expected. Friedman’s resolve resulted in the successful completion of the deal, stating, “Obviously, we were of the mind to be aggressive and try to get a deal done.” Despite their roster already being formidable, the Dodgers seized the opportunity to enhance their rotation.
Analytics favored the trade as the Dodgers managed without disturbing their major-league lineup. River Ryan made four major-league starts but health issues delayed further opportunities. Friedman acknowledged, “We gave up a lot of talent. But with where our core is, erring on the side of aggressive made the most sense right now.” Skubal will join a strong rotation lineup alongside Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani, if all players remain healthy.
Veteran utility player Miguel Rojas noted, “It’s a statement from this organization to the league.” He emphasized the Dodgers’ commitment to maintaining their leading position. However, question marks still remain surrounding player health.
Skubal and Snell had surgeries to remove loose bodies from their pitching elbows, with Skubal recently appearing nine times. Snell’s return is imminent after one rehab run. Glasnow, almost ready for a rehab assignment, dealt with back spasms sidelining him for months. Ohtani’s knee issues are more uncertain, affecting pitching for nearly a month, though a planned return is underway in Chicago this week.
Friedman expressed confidence in Ohtani’s recovery, stating, “You can never perfectly predict the future but if you said, ‘Hey, place a bet on it,’ I would be confident.” Ohtani’s return would require gradual buildup without a rehab assignment, paralleling his previous season pattern.
Currently, Skubal is set for his Dodgers debut against the Cubs. Meanwhile, the Dodgers remain engaged in trade conversations, but additional roster additions seem unlikely. “Never say never,” Friedman commented, acknowledging their existing robust lineup.
