Trump’s Truth Social Launches Market-Moving Service

President Donald Trump’s new venture aims to monetize his influential social media presence. Starting Saturday, his Truth Social platform will offer advance glimpses of his posts to Wall Street traders willing to pay. This move could result in significant profits for Trump’s company, while raising concerns about insider trading and the use of public office for private gain.

Other social media companies sell similar fast-speed feeds, but Truth Social has a unique impact. Trump’s posts often contain policy changes that affect the financial markets. Irene Aldridge from Able Alpha Trading commented, “If this was the CEO of a public company, this would be jail time.”

Truth Social’s parent company, Trump Media & Technology, defended the service. They criticized Democratic detractors for allegedly misunderstanding the nature of public versus nonpublic information.

Profiting from Insider Insights

Trump’s online statements have caused stocks, bonds, and currencies to fluctuate. High-frequency traders exploit tiny, fleeting price differences. With advance notice of Trump’s intentions, traders can make significant profits. Recently, Trump threatened to increase tariffs on Canada, end a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, and expand conflict with Iran. Traders with this knowledge could profit from these signals.

The service, called Truth API, attracts firms investing in high-speed data feeds. Joe Saluzzi from Themis Trading predicts approximately 100 high-frequency firms might pay for Trump’s insights.

Market Impact and Ethics

Critics argue that despite simultaneous information release, traders with advanced processing systems will act faster than retail investors. Saluzzi sees them as the eventual losers. Moreover, Trump occasionally praises specific companies, inciting buying sprees. When Trump commended Palantir Technologies, its stock price spiked.

High-speed traders have not publicly confirmed their subscription to Truth API. The fee is $100,000 monthly, with three subscribers potentially doubling Trump Media’s revenue.

Challenges and Future Developments

Truth Social’s stock has dropped by 75% since Trump took office. The company faces ongoing financial losses. The president’s frequent policy updates via Truth Social highlight the platform’s uniqueness, indicated by his tendency to break news there first.

Potential Democratic investigations could pose hurdles for the company. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has already vowed to investigate the service if Democrats gain congressional control.

Should financial pressures persist, Trump may increase his use of Truth Social for policy announcements. Craig Holman from Public Citizen anticipates more strategic posts.
