JERUSALEM, Israel: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s comments have been criticized by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who accused him of spreading antisemitic rhetoric. Herzog warned that Mamdani’s words could jeopardize New Yorkers’ safety.
Following a video where Mamdani labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal, Herzog expressed concern over the potential impact on New York-Israel relations. “This cannot be accepted,” Herzog stated, emphasizing the city’s importance to Israelis.
“Mamdani does not respect my nation’s right for self-determination,” Herzog said.
Herzog’s remarks also targeted Iran’s government. He highlighted Tehran’s financial support for terrorism, pointing to its global threat. He cited Iran’s missile program and nuclear ambitions as ongoing challenges for U.S. security. Herzog praised the joint U.S.-Israel military initiative, Operation Epic Fury, aimed at countering Iranian threats.
Herzog discussed the strong U.S.-Israel relationship, aligning it with shared historical values. He praised former U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions, such as relocating the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Herzog noted Trump’s role in negotiating the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Despite political differences, Herzog affirmed the enduring friendship between the U.S. and Israel, stressing the need for bipartisan support. He attributed declining U.S. support for Israel to disinformation campaigns on social media platforms.
“It’s very easy to smear Israel on TikTok, but that doesn’t say the real truth,” Herzog commented.
Herzog described Israel as a hub of innovation, contributing to global advancements in health, energy, and agriculture. He encouraged young Americans to visit and experience the country’s innovations firsthand.
In light of recent U.S. defense policy developments, Herzog addressed the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties. He noted that Israel will adapt following attacks like those on October 7, emphasizing the necessity of security measures.
Herzog reflected on the U.S.-Israel relationship’s impact, discussing recent meetings between Netanyahu and Trump. Herzog commended the late Sen. Lindsey Graham for his support and understanding of Israel’s geopolitical role.
Herzog also emphasized Israel’s commitment to Christian communities in the region, advocating for interfaith dialogue and support. He recognized the challenges faced by Christian communities in the Middle East and Israel’s efforts to assist them.
“I know of cases where there was tension and we’re dealing with it aggressively,” Herzog said regarding anti-Christian incidents.
Commenting on the International Criminal Court controversy, Herzog criticized former Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan for allegedly diverting attention from misconduct allegations. He called for the case against Israeli officials to be dropped.
Herzog praised U.S. efforts in the Gaza ceasefire plan, acknowledging the potential for a significant impact on the region’s future. He concluded with a clear stance on Hamas’s role in Gaza, advocating for their disarmament.
